We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Exceptional pair of "cassolettes" style Napoleon III or late Empire black marble, the most striking feature of these objects is the square plinth base that supports each "cassolette", has a balanced shape with strong lines and decided (in classical architecture, the plinth is an element of square shape that supports the base of the column); the front square face has some simple geometrical decorations enriched with pure gold; the central column, which supports the circular saucer, has a curvilinear, soft and harmonious shape that creates an elegant and fascinating contrast with the base. The two objects were made between 1870 and 1880 in a marble workshop in Montpellier in Lanquedoc, a historic region in the south of France, famous for its marble extraction and processing. The artisans used a very particular and expensive material: Absolute Black Marble, also known as African Black Granite; it is a marble that holds records for beauty and value, specifically a uniform black rock, originally from South Africa. It has always been an extremely sought-after material for luxury interior furnishings, prestigious flooring, and high-class objects. The reason is enclosed in its preciousness and beauty: just think that the Pantheon in Rome bears a large block at the entrance. Unfortunately, it is not a very stable marble, in the long run, there may be a slight discoloration of gray as has happened in some parts of our cassolettes (which have about 150 years!). The "cassolettes" were vases or containers (burners) that were placed on the upper edge of fireplaces in pairs or one on each side next to a clock or a pendulum (we suggest also the function of bookends); they were very often made of precious metal, bronze or precious marble; our pair belongs to this last category, in fact, it is made, as we said, with very precious marble. The cassolettes in examination present different small imperfections (see photo), that doesn't disturb their exceptional aesthetics; those showier are located below the saucer (see photo), (see photo), therefore not very visible. Measures diameter cm.16, height cm.20.For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
