African Portrait with red Tribal Makeup by Jean Poulain, Art Deco, 1946
This striking portrait of an African lady is by Jean Poulain, a Belgian painter who lived in Congo before the decolonisation. He travelled extensively throughout Africa in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for the portraits and wild animals he painted during his travels at the heart of Africa. Signed and dated "Jean Poulain 1946" bottom right. Gouache and pastel on paper. Another portrait in the same style and same size is proposed by the gallery making a beautiful pair.
