Froschkönig ( Frog King - from "The Beauty and the Beast" series)
This aquatint on copper plate is from "The Beauty and the Beast" series from Fritz Aigner. The woman sitting above the frog King, nude and desirous looking down on him. The frog himself on the other hand ist not simply a amphibian but also has a human kind of face expression. They are definitely flirting witch each other, almost in bed, the night in the background. This print is a typical Aigner work, ironic somehow but certainly with erotic connotations. Fritz Aigner was a austrian painter and was called the "Rembrandt of Linz". His Paintings vary between realism, phantastic realism, surrealism and caricature. Aigner worked in Spain, Ireland, London and Austria after his degree at the "Wiener Akademie" (vienna academy). He was married to Auguste Kronheim-Aigner in first marriage.
