Italian Flush Mount by Fontana Arte

A two light ‘Model 1942A’ flush mount or sconce by Fontana Arte, Italy. Together with manufacturers like Arteluce, Arredoluce and Stilnovo, Fontana Arte stands out in the history of (Mid-Century) Italian lighting design. Fontana Arte was founded in 1932 by glass manufacturer Luigi Fontana and Gio Ponti. Artistic director Ponti, soon invited Pietro Chiesa to become the company’s principal designer. In 1954 Chiesa was succeeded by the French glass artist Max Ingrand, who held this position until 1964. This lamp which can be used both as a wall light and a ceiling light, is equipped with a hinged ‘brute’ glass convex shade, The perforations on the sides of the fixture spread a radiant light across the ceiling or wall. This elegant lamp shows similarities with designs of both Pietro Chiesa and Max Ingrand and can be dated to the late 1940s or early 1950s. White painted metal and chromed metal; satinized glass. Good condition: original sockets, new wire. Literature: - Fontana Arte Catalogue (n.d.), p. 28.
