Large Italian Pendant by Martinelli Luce

Calotta model 1749 pendant by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce, in brushed stainless steel. Dimensions: Height 12.6 in. (32 cm), diameter: 21.8 inches (55,5 cm). Elio Martinelli (1922-2004) was trained as a set designer, but gained experience in the field of lighting design in his father’s company. And in the wake of firms like Stilnovo and Arredoluce, Martinelli founded his own company in his native Lucca in 1950. Initially Martinelli focussed on the developing lighting solutions for the commercial and residential projects he was involved in as a designer. But soon he began to design lighting fixtures for a broader, more remote market, which he approached through catalogs. Over the years Martinelli has produced numerous innovative lamps, designed both by himself and by other designers. Many of those lights have become true classics. To name a few: the Cobra, the Serpente, the Mappamondo, the Pipistrello (by Gae Aulenti) and the Profiterole (by Sergio Asti). The large Calotta, executed in stainless steel, is one of the first documented Martinelli Luce products. Literature: - G. Gramigna, Repertorio 1950/1980 (Milano 1985), p. 200.
