Superb French screen with three panels in wood gilded with gold leaf, the panels have been covered both front and back with a sumptuous damask fabric finished with trimmings; in the side panels, at the top to facilitate the passage of light from one side to the other has been placed a series of finely ground glass, while on the central one there is an oval, surrounded by rich and valuable leaf decorations performed with the method "a pastiglia", in which is inserted an oil painting on paper protected by a ground glass; The painting represents an idyllic country scene with a boy and a girl surrounded by flowers and a pretty sheep; the wooden part of the whole screen is decorated with refined and wise Empire style carvings. The "pastiglia" processing, the fruit of the ancient artisan tradition, was born in Italy in the late fifteenth century, remains in use for most of the seventeenth century, and then continued in the nineteenth century. The "pastiglia" consisted of a mixture of gypsum (calcium carbonate), vegetable-gluey resins, honey, linseed oil, and often marble dust. On the wooden support a veil of cloth was glued and subsequently various states of "pastiglia" were spread, this was then imprinted or engraved or finely modeled, usually, the decorative motifs were in bas-relief, then the whole was allowed to harden and in the end, very thin gold leaves were applied. The screen was made in Louis XVI style between 1920 and 1925 by skilled and experienced cabinetmakers in a workshop in the French town of Liffon-le-Grand located in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region, an area famous for woodworking. The antique screen comes from a long and ancient oriental tradition and has accompanied the changes of life and taste in France through the centuries. Before being imported to Europe in the mid-seventeenth century by the French and Dutch Compagnie des Indes, screens had several roles in China and Japan: inside a room as a movable partition to allow privacy or to preserve heat, and even to stop spirits at the entrance of the houses. The screen had growing success in Europe, especially since the middle of the eighteenth century that saw the emergence of a rich bourgeoisie, its use declined in the early nineteenth century, then reappears in 1860 under the reign of Napoleon III, at the beginning of the twentieth century with the development of modern means of heating, the functional role of insulation of the screen disappears in favor of its high decorative role. Our screen, an object of extreme elegance, an expression of grandeur and luxury, becomes a superb classic element for any room in your home.
