Pair of Silver Plated Cast Victorian Dolphin Candlesticks England, circa 1870


The candlesticks are made completely in excellent fusion, the finishing was done by chisel so as to bring out all the details of the objects, they were produced in England during the Victorian period. The solid square base supports a fish-shaped stem, this is the Classic representation that is given to the dolphin; the iconography of the dolphin, often represented as a large fish, has been used in art since ancient times, this animal is associated with different mythological narratives and multiple symbolic meanings. At the Greek civilization, it was linked to the cult of Apollo and from him, the city of Delphi was named. In mythology and legends around the world, he is considered a friend of man, an instrument of the forces of good against the occult powers of evil. Artists of all ages have often used the dolphin in their works (Giambologna, Verrocchio, Bernini, etc.).
