Terracotta slip wayward vase Handmade by Matthias Kaiser, 2018 Measures: Height 33.0 cm / 13.0 in. This new variant of Matthias Kaiser´s wayward vase shape has a tapered neck that is well suited to display a single flower. The body is round and rests on a tall cylindrical foot. The vase is made from buff colored, hand harvested and unrefined stoneware clay. It has been fired three times in differing kiln atmospheres to achieve the mottled, terracotta-coloured surface. The reddish areas are applications of dark stoneware clay that have been sanded and treated with iron ore. The inside of the vase is glazed. The exterior, despite its earthy and rugged apperance, has been polished to a smooth finish. Matthias Kaiser studied at Parsons school of design in NY and at Vienna´s university of applied arts, apprenticed with two Japanese master potters in Seto and Karatsu, he spent a combined 2 years travelling on the Indian subcontinent and for a period of 13 years he was the Akhavan of an Iranian dervish.
