Yellow headphone wayward vase, 2017 by Matthias Kaiser
D 14,5 cm / 5,71 in; W 14 cm / 5,51 in; H 28 cm / 11,02 in
Matthias Kaiser´s wayward vase has become an icon of contemporary studio pottery.
The shape comes in many variations of size, color and texture.
This fine example features a headphone-shaped patch of black textured engobe that amplifies the geometric and anthropomorphic connotations of the piece.
The vase has been assembled from three wheel thrown parts, body, neck and foot.
It is made from hand harvested, natural dark stoneware clay that contains iron ore and quartz particles.
These impurities, in combination with the slip application, multiple high temperature firings and other treatments, give the piece its characteristic cracked texture.
It has a polished outer surface and a glazed interior. The glaze is made from apple wood ash and reed ash.
