"Black Gloves", Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962)
€31.000,00
Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962) was a distinguished French painter and engraver, celebrated above all for his portraits of elegant women—or, perhaps more accurately, for a particular feminine ideal that he refined throughout his career, instantly recognisable and imbued with the spirit of Art Deco.
A distant cousin of Toulouse-Lautrec, Domergue studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français as early as 1906. There he garnered several honours, among them the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1913.
In 1939, he designed the now-iconic poster for the inaugural Cannes Film Festival—ultimately cancelled—which depicted a woman applauding beside a man in evening dress. Elected to the Institut de France in 1950, Domergue later served as curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, where he oversaw a number of major exhibitions.
