This elegant group of three botanical watercolours demonstrates Ester Brunstedt Ahlgren's keen observational skill and refined technique. Each study portrays a single flowering plant against a plain warm brown paper background, allowing the forms, colors and delicate structure of the blossoms to become the sole focus. The restrained presentation recalls the tradition of nineteenth-century botanical illustration, where scientific accuracy was combined with artistic sensitivity. The left-hand study depicts Cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus), rendered with finely articulated blue petals and slender stems. The central study most closely resembles Dame's Rocket / Sweet Rocket (Hesperis matronalis), with its tall flowering spike of pale blue/purple blossoms and unopened buds. The right-hand study is a White Iris (Iris sp.), distinguished by its elegant white petals, sword-like foliage and yellow markings at the centre of the flower.
