It’s a joy for the eyes and soul to admire the countless details of this village overlooking the sea of Naples’ bay with the mount Vesuvius on the background depicted in this old masters oil painting on board. This awesome rectangular oil on panel marine landscape is signed low right by Consalvo Carelli, a valued Italian 19th century artist. On a clear sunny day in the gulf of Naples the fishermen fish on their boats, other boats are moored on the shore and the village of the coast perched on a hill full of houses, churches and monuments is reflected in the sea. The artist has rendered this landscape with relaxed and calm tones, the predominant colors are blue, yellow, green and purple. Brighter colors like red are used for some details like the typical fisherman's hats. The brushstrokes, even if small and quick, in the manner of the impressionists, demonstrate the skill of this painter who captured even the smallest details. The perspective of this painting is very interesting, emphasizing both the landscape and the characters. Perfectly detailed from the windows of the houses to the details of the architectures. Consalvo Carelli (Arenella 1818–1900 Naples) was an Italian landscape painter who joined the School of Posillipo like his father Raffaele. He is also known as Gonsalvo Carelli. The present work represents fishermen in Pozzuoli, there Carrelli met Alexandre Dumas, who commissioned the illustration for his book “from Naples to Rome”. Carelli’s skills were higly appreciated also in the Italian court; the painter become in fact the personal teacher of Margherita di Savoia. The Fine quality of his works arouse the interest of the abroad aristocracy, particularly in Russia. Some of his landscape of Naples are still now on display in the Hermitage Museum.
