Gaston Suisse (1896–1988) was a French decorator and a leading figure of the Art Deco movement. He designed several stage sets for the Ballets Russes at the Paris Opera and costumes for the Comédie Française before specializing in lacquer work. He distinguished himself through his refined craftsmanship in furniture and decorative panels. He took part in numerous international exhibitions, including the 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris. His creations were often inspired by flora and fauna, which he depicted with precision and elegance, drawing from his travel sketches made in Africa. His expertise in traditional Japanese lacquer techniques made him one of the greatest lacquer artists of his time. Couple of Parakeets in the Mimosas Engraved lacquer panel on a black lacquer background; with its original support frame made by the artist. Parakeets and flowers enhanced with gold powder. Flat support frame in distressed brown lacquer. Signed G. Suisse in red lacquer at the lower left.
