Early 17th Century German oil painting on chamfered oak panel by Maller Michael Nagel signed in gilt on hem of cloak. The date 1602 is on the edge of the book. The painting depicts the Evangelist and Apostle Saint Luke seated in the wilderness and receiving inspiration from an Angel of the Lord to write his Gospels. The image on the left would appear to depict the Jesse Tree, including at the base Adam and Eve. It has been framed with a double molding. The first molding is a walnut wood floater, and the second is a hand-finished wood molding.
