Brief biography: H. Zimmermann was born in Aussig, Bohemia in 1924 and died in Passau, where he resided, in 2014.
After World War II he attended the Munich and Nuremberg Academies of fine arts. His many travels throughout Europe, the US, Northern Africa, India, Japan and China as well as his studies of C.G. Jung’s psychology and Martin Heidegger’s philosophy led Helmut Zimmermann to his “image transformations”, his metamorphoses of faces and mandalas in mystical circular and polygonal images.
In addition to his work as a painter, Zimmermann was also active as a writer and film-maker. His films show image sequences of metamorphoses. The camera records his painting process and documents the transformation from one image to another. He keeps painting over the images he creates so that their various intermediate stages exist only on film. The artist donated his cinematic legacy to the Munich Film Museum in the autumn of 2004.
