This Neo-classical style garden antique sculpture was realized in the late 19th century. This cast iron has a black patina for the base, anvil and hammer, meanwhile the character is painted in white.
Its position is typical of classical statuary, he stands on his right leg and the left leg, free of body weight, is more relaxed.
This cast iron sculpture was made after a drawing by the famous Mathurin Moreau (1822 – 1912) for the Val d'Osne foundries.

This life-size sculpture refers to the young Vulcan at his forge, god of Roman blacksmith, called Hephaestus by the Greeks.
But this iconography of Vulcan is quite unusual, as mythological texts describes an ugly and limping god. Here, the sculptor choose to represent a beautiful and slender young man.
It is likely that the inspiration is not a representation of Vulcan, but David. A large number of artwork depicted the triumphant young man, after his fight against the giant Goliath.
