This oil study by Edward Rosenberg (1858–1934) captures a tranquil lakeside scene at sunset, framed by distant mountains. The sun has just disappeared behind the mountains, casting a warm afterglow across the sky and reflecting subtly on the water's surface. Two small boats lie overturned on the beach, suggesting a moment of quiet repose. Executed in oil on canvas laid down on cardboard, the work is unsigned but bears an inscription on the reverse: "E. Rosenberg", possibly by the artist, and "Study for ..... landscape...," This study is most likely a preparatory work for a larger painting by Rosenberg.
Edward Rosenberg, also known as Edvard Axel Rosenberg, was a Swedish painter born in Stockholm in 1858. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1879 to 1882, earning the Royal Medal in 1882. Rosenberg's paintings often depict the unique Scandinavian light conditions, particularly during the extremities of the day when the sun casts vibrant hues across the landscape. His focus on atmospheric light and serene natural settings has cemented his place as a distinguished interpreter of Swedish nature.
Rosenberg's paintings have been exhibited internationally. After his studies at Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1882 he spent two years in France, further honing his artistic skills. He participated in the Paris Salon multiple times after 1883, receiving an honorable mention in 1886. His work "Marskväll" (Mars Evening) was showcased in Munich in 1901, marking his greatest international success. Rosenberg's art is represented in several museums, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Norrköping Art Museum.?
This oil study exemplifies Rosenberg's mastery in capturing the subtle interplay of light and landscape, offering insight into his process and the beauty of Swedish nature that he so eloquently portrayed throughout his career.?
