Impressionist summer landscape with a younger woman seated in the grass next to a tree by Peter H. Wilhardt (1866-1929). Oil on canvas laid down on panel. Inscribed verso in Danish: "Malet af Peter H. Wilhardt" ("Painted by Peter H. Wilhardt"). Also inscribed "Mormor" ("Grandma"). Provenance: Family of the artist. This lovely little intimate oil sketch depicts a woman, possibly his wife, seated in the grass beneath a tree in a wooded landscape. Wearing a white blouse, long skirt and a broad hat, she rests in the shade. Executed with rapid and confident brushstrokes, the composition places greater emphasis on atmosphere, light and color than on detailed finish. The freely painted handling of the foliage and the subdued palette of greens and warm earth tones give the work a spontaneous character, suggesting that it was painted directly from nature, en plain air. This painting is a fine example of Peter H. Wilhardt's plein air studies from the late 19th century, revealing his sensitivity to the changing effects of light and his ability to convey the quiet mood of a summer day. Peter Hans Wilhardt was born in Skjoldelev near Aarhus in 1866 and belongs to the generation of Danish painters who bridged the traditions of the Danish Golden Age with the more naturalistic tendencies that emerged during the late nineteenth century. He first trained as a house painter before entering the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he studied from 1884 to 1892 under prominent artists including Julius Exner, Frederik Vermehren and Otto Bache. During his years as an artist, Wilhardt travelled extensively throughout Europe. He visited France in 1889, where he encountered contemporary French painting and the plein air tradition, and later travelled to Italy and Germany in 1892 to further his artistic studies. In 1925 he undertook a study journey to Finland, whose forests and lakes provided subjects that closely aligned with his own interest in Nordic landscape painting. Wilhardt established himself primarily as a landscape painter, although he also executed portraits and historical compositions. While firmly rooted in the tradition of Danish Naturalism, many of his smaller oil sketches display a freedom of execution and freshness of observation that reveal an affinity with the broader Scandinavian plein air movement and certain aspects of Impressionism. In addition to his landscapes, Wilhardt painted portraits of members of the Danish royal family. He exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen as well as at regional exhibitions throughout Denmark, where his paintings earned appreciation for their poetic interpretations of nature and their refined painterly qualities. Wilhardt died in in 1929. The present work, with its informal composition and freely painted surface, offers a particularly charming example of this aspect of his artistic production.
