This serene coastal landscape depicts a summer day at a small rocky cape near Pataholm, Kalmarsund, Sweden, which is a historic village on the western shore of Kalmarsund in southeastern Sweden. Pataholm lies in Mönsterås Municipality, Småland, approximately halfway between Kalmar and Oskarshamn, overlooking the narrow strait that separates the Swedish mainland from the island of Öland. Painted in 1892, the composition captures the quiet character of the Baltic coastline. A broad grassy peninsula, scattered with rounded glacial boulders, extends gently into the calm waters of Kalmarsund beneath a pale blue, lightly clouded sky. The artist avoids dramatic effects, instead emphasizing the expansive horizon, the subtle reflections on the sea, and the restrained colours of the coastal meadow. The low viewpoint and carefully balanced composition create a convincing sense of space and tranquillity. Executed with confident naturalistic brushwork, the painting reflects the plein-air tradition that became increasingly important among Swedish landscape painters during the late nineteenth century. The signature reads "Albin Johanson", the name under which the artist worked during his early career. He later adopted the surname Jerneman, by which he is best known today. Johan Albin Johansson Jerneman was born in 1868 in Småland, and died in 1953 in Danderyd, north of Stockholm. He was the son of tailor Jonas Peter Johansson and Carolina Jönsdotter. During his early artistic career he signed his works Albin Johansson, changing his surname to Jerneman sometime between 1914 and 1922. Jerneman moved to Stockholm in 1886 to pursue an artistic education. He first studied at the Tekniska skolan (Technical School, now Konstfack) before entering the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts where he studied between 1888 and 1894. He continued his training during 1895–1896, studying etching under the distinguished printmaker Axel Tallberg, adding graphic techniques to his artistic repertoire. Albin Jerneman worked as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Although portraiture formed an important part of his production, he also painted landscapes and genre scenes inspired by the Swedish countryside and coastline. His landscapes are characterized by careful observation, balanced compositions, and a restrained naturalistic palette, reflecting the academic training he received in Stockholm while maintaining a strong interest in painting directly from nature. His surviving body of work demonstrates considerable versatility, ranging from charcoal academy studies and portraits to quiet landscapes such as the present view from Pataholm. During his career Jerneman participated in several important collective exhibitions in Sweden, including: Exhibitions at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Konstakademien).
