Full details of the work: https://www.antichitacastelbarco.it/it/prodotto/veduta-di-venezia-con-il-canal-grande--seconda-meta-dell-ottocento The pleasant canvas, executed with a good pictorial quality, shows a glimpse of the Grand Canal of Venice, with some boats moored to the typical houses that line the numerous canals of the lagoon city. The painting, executed in the second half of the nineteenth century, is the work of a prominent painter and is characterized by an excellent level of execution. The signature at the bottom right is certainly a pseudonym, an expedient commonly adopted by many painters of this era. One of the main reasons for this was to keep the real name of the masters hidden, often linked to exclusive contracts that did not allow them to paint for clients outside the directives of the art gallery owners to whom they were linked. One of the most prolific and talented landscape painters, with particular meticulousness and refined style, we can certainly name Karl Kaufmann, who preferred Venice as the subject for his works. Kaufmann often signed his works with pseudonyms, and 'O.Halm' is precisely one of these, allowing him to satisfy numerous clients without having to reveal his true identity. He studied at the Vienna Academy and subsequently made numerous trips to Europe including Italy, a popular destination for any artist wishing to complete a complete artistic training. He stayed in Naples, Rome and above all Venice, of which the Austrian artist was literally in love and of which he executed a considerable number of views of the city of which our painting is an excellent example. The state of conservation is very good. Complete with a beautiful and important gilded frame of the time. Like all our objects, the work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive card (FIMA).
