Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, 16th Century, Oil on Canvas
$22,000.00
16th Century Spanish Colonial Oil on canvas painting of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. In this representation of the Virgin Mary being free of original sin from the moment of her conception, the virgin is stepping on a serpent eating an apple. Alluding to us to the Garden of Eden when Even disobeyed God, ate the fruit and gave it to Adam her husband. It is this act of original Sin where we lost our original innocence. The Virgin is flanked by cherubs, one holding the symbol of the kingdom and the other a mirror. The devil is beneath her at her feet along with a skeleton.
The painting has been mounted in a double frame, walnut floater and hand carved gold gilded exterior wood frame.
