Stunning coffee table designed by Emiel Veranneman in Belgium around 1960. This beautifully designed piece is completely made of the highest quality wengé wood. It is well crafted with a very nice eye for detail, a unique and eye-catching piece of Belgium design! In good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Belgian designer Emiel Veranneman (1924 – 2003) is recognized above all for his atypical furniture design. Being an art collector and dealer himself, he was close friends with several international successful artists such as Victor Vasarely, Octaaf Landuyt and Pol Mara, who later also became clients of Veranneman for interior projects. These friendships formed a breeding ground of inspiration, in combination with his personal interest for South-American, African and Asian art. The designs of Veranneman shows unusual, strong, powerful and sincere characteristics, elements considered being typical Flemish. After studying architecture and interior design, Emiel Veranneman started designing furniture. One of his first major expositions (1958, Paleis voor Schone Kunsten, Brussels), showed his ‘Shell-sofa’ along with paintings by Octaaf Landuyt. In 1964 Veranneman opened his own art gallery at the Louizalaan in Brussels, showing artwork by highly regarded contemporary artists. In 1970 Veranneman designed the furniture for the Belgian pavilion at the world exposition in Osaka, Japan, which resulted in the refreshing Osaka chair, in mahony and silk. Other projects included many interior designs for artists such as Roger Raveel, Bram Bogaert and Pol Mara and the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence, France, which consisted of 860 chairs and sofas.
