Elegant and refined Austrian walnut coffee table; it was made in Art Deco style between 1936 and 1938 in a small carpenter's workshop in Abtenau, an Austrian town in the district of Hallein near Salzburg, in the small town there were several wood workshops and even today produces one of the most important Austrian furniture factories: the Voglauer. It has a simple but very sturdy structure; the legs have a particular and decisive shape, rounded in the front and cut at right angles in the back; very special and interesting is the work done by the craftsmen in assembling different types of walnut in the table: the lower surface and the legs are in "European blond" walnut, for the upper surface they have created a wonderful mosaic with slabs of "Feather Walnut" and in the center, they have placed a beautiful slab of "Walnut Briar"! The "European blond walnut" (Juglans Regia) is a very valuable wood, one of the best in absolute quality; the "Feather walnut" is obtained from the most valuable part of the tree by cutting the trunk lengthwise in the point where it forks into two branches; the "Walnut root" is obtained from the root of the tree. All of these processes have exalted the colors, the flaming, and the grain of this precious and versatile wood. Ancient sanding, varnishing, and polishing techniques have also increased the capacity of walnut wood not to become impregnated: common polishing waxes, therefore, act only on the surface without affecting the internal part of the wood and making it spongy and therefore less resistant. The craftsmen who worked on this table have managed to create an extraordinary piece of furniture, refined and compelling, extraordinary and unique ability to communicate suggestions of times past, tradition, and functionality.
