Important I. S. Henry tall back chair, exceptional original condition, London 1895. Mahogany (solid), polished, brownish original leather, upholstery button nails, strikingly high backrest with stylised decoration in low releif. Back legs slightly bent, front legs cut downward with widened ends. Low seat and slightly bowed armrests partly upholstered in leather. Trendy phantasy furniture. In the English specialized professional journal „THE CABINETMAKER AND ART FURNISHER, year 1985 the fashion of the high backrest and low seat was attributed to American influence. In the year 1896 it reappeared in the same journal under title „Furnishing fancies.” Between several drawings of similar bizzare seating furniture. („The Cabinetmaker & Art Furnisher, March 1896, page 230 ) Chair was aquired in 1895 from I S Henry for the Trade Museum, Vienna, Austria on price of 5 pounds sterling. In 1897 it was transfered to the Osterreichischen Museum. Now, the chair is in the collection of MAK. The Austrian Museum of Applied Arts. Inv. no. : H 1260 Documents: Drawing in the register of the Trade Museum no. 1580.
