Exceptional Pair of German Neo-Renaissance Majolica and Wrought Iron Oil Lamp Sconces, c. 1880
€4.500,00
An exceptional pair of late nineteenth-century German Neo-Renaissance wall sconces, combining masterfully forged wrought iron with richly decorated majolica reservoirs.
The pierced ceramic bodies are adorned with hand-painted scrolling foliage, floral ornament, and stylized dragon motifs, enclosed within elegant wrought-iron frameworks displaying a high level of craftsmanship. Originally conceived as oil lamps, the sconces retain their original glass chimneys and embody the romantic historicism that defined the finest German decorative arts of the period.
The interplay between the dark forged iron and vibrant majolica decoration creates a dramatic architectural presence, making these sconces equally suitable as functional lighting or sculptural decorative objects.
Rarely encountered as a surviving pair, and even more unusual when associated with a matching chandelier from the same suite, these pieces represent an outstanding example of Central European Renaissance Revival design.
