'The Rest At Sunset' Light Sculpture by Ayala Serfaty

$15,000.00

‘The Rest At Sunset’ is a unique, table light sculpture and part of the renowned 'Soma’ series. These fascinating, intangible luminous works reminiscent of biomorphic forms are included in numerous permanent museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Each work is handmade in the artist's workshop in Tel Aviv out of thin glass rods blown in Murano that she heats with a flame until they partially melt and join together. Little by little appears a cobweb-like structure, a true glass lace that she then coats in a sprayed translucent polymer membrane that also filters the light. ‘Soma’ captures the viewer’s gaze, bringing him to experience nature in its spiritual and emotional dimensions. Lights like crystals of sparkling snow, clouds, corals or lichens: the assertion of life forms and at the same time the impossibility of deciding between one or the other introduces an irresistible movement toward the sublime. With 'Soma' ('body' in Greek), far from copying nature, Ayala Serfaty gives form to the breath of life. The glass veins, that always remain visible under the polymer skin, are the incarnation both of the power and the fragility of human beings. On the following link to our web page you can see a video of how the artist actually works to make these very beautiful sculptures: http://www.galeriebsl.com/artists/14-ayala-serfaty. Since the 1990’s Ayala Serfaty has forged a unique path in the world of contemporary design, creating and crafting conceptual lights and furniture. Her work has been described by scholars as ‘multi-disciplinary’, as ‘fusion of art, craft, and design’, and as defusing the line between the natural and the abstract. Her approach focuses on ancient traditions, striving to revive their spirit and energies in an unorthodox, unexpected, and innovative manner. Ayala Serfaty has exhibited in museums worldwide such as the London Design Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, le Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, just to name a few. Her work is included in the permanent collections of numerous museums in the US: Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Museum of Arts and Design in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Mint Museum, Corning Museum of Glass, Indianapolis Museum of Art.
