'EUROPE RIDING ON BULL / THE RAPE OF EUROPE' (MODEL 2697),
manufactured circa 1860.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Europa is sitting on the bull which is metamorphosed Greek God Zeus who had fallen in love with her (for this reason Zeus had prepared kidnapping which was finally successful). - Two maidens are presenting flowers to Europa / a basket filled with flowers is visible on ground. The figurines are coloured in various shades. The flowers held by the maidens are excellently sculptured
as well as delicately painted, too. The figurines' features are of stunning beauty, a fact which indicates the highest quality of modelling being revealed here ! The figurines are based on oval support decorated with Rocaille ornaments.
DESIGNER:
Kaendler was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory as from 1742 until the year 1775. He is the most famous modeller ever having been active in Meissen, having created superb vases as well as well-known series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer), Gallant Figurines, Asian Figurines etc. - Kändler designed the group 'RAPE OF EUROPA' circa 1750, the modeller J.F. Eberlein assisted him.
