Francesco de Mura Italian 18th Century Oval Religious Oil on Canvas Painting with Saint Dominic and the Holy Trinity

€11.000,00

This beautiful Italian 18th Century old masters oil painting on oval canvas with giltwood frame is attributed to Francesco De Mura and features a religious scene. In this splendid oval-shaped painting are depicted Saint Dominic in front of the Trinity surrounded by angels, cherubs and putti. In the foreground Saint Dominic kneels in front of Jesus and God, the Saint, as in classical iconography, is represented with a dog by his side that symbolizes the fidelity of Domenic and the Bible resting on the ground. At the top left Jesus holds the Cross and is wrapped in a blue cloak, symbol of His divinity; at the top right, is represented God the Father with a beige and green drape, leaning on the Earth globe, the right hand blesses and on the left hand holds the scepter of power. In the centre is also depicted a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. All these characters are surrounded by clouds, cherubs and putti. An angel, surrounded by a red cloth, holds in his hands the flower of the lily, symbol of peace and purity. The painting is attributed to the famous artist Francesco De Mura. The canvas, although of convenient size is full of characters, details and colors, this suggests that this painting was a sketch produced by the artist to show the client his ability and then the subject has been reproduced all, or just in some parts, on a much larger canvas, probably an altarpiece to be placed in a church. Francesco de Mura (21 April 1696 – 19 August 1782) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period, active mainly in Naples, Rome and Turin. His late work reflects the style of neoclassicism. He was the favorite pupil of Francesco Solimena. He worked with Domenico Viola and in his atelier he met his contemporary Mattia Preti. Among De Mura pupils was Pietro Bardellino. Francesco De Mura was a very appreciated and valued artist, known for the his religious subjects but also a skilled portraitist. His works of art are exposed in the most important churches in Naples and Italy and his masterpieces are exposed in many national and international museums.
