Italian Late 19th Century Orientalist Style Oil on Board Painting with Classical Roman Ruins View

This fascinating turn of the century oil on wood panel painting, depicting a view of one of the most evocative Roman ruins, contains stories from different artistic eras. The pride of Italian realism is represented in the group of villagers who, dressed in traditional clothes with their herds, enter the city through the arch of Titus, one of the most impressive and important architectures of Ancient Rome dating back to 1st century AD. This view, however, also recalls the orientalist taste and the fashion of painting glimpses of the most important Italian monuments typical of the Grand Tour period. The neutral color palette with different shades of brown, beige and green is enlivened by the red color patches of the traditional clothes of the peasants while the city of Rome in the background, behind the arch, opens to a pleasant perspective. The Arch of Titus is an honorific building, located near the Roman Forum, constructed in circa 1981 AD by the Emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus to commemorate Titus's official deification or consecration and the victory of Titus together with their father, Vespasian, over the Jewish rebellion in Judaea. The menorah depicted on the arch served as the model for the menorah used as the emblem of the state of Israel. The Arch was the architectural model for the Arc de Triomphe (1836) in Paris. Views of Roman monuments were the most popular themes used by artists during the 19th century, supplying the flow of wealthy Grand tourists from Northern Europe. Small scale paintings were among the most sought after souvenirs from Italy. Our painting, dating back to late 19th-early 20th century, takes inspiration from the neoclassical views very famous during Grand Tour period. Both the architecture and the characters are extremely well executed and detailed in this conveniently sized rectangular painting, housed in a luxurious lacquered and parcel gilt carved wood frame. Very good overall condition, bright and saturated colors, stabile surface. Please note: Italian Fine Arts Authority must check this item in order to allow its exportation.
