Sergey CHEKHONIN (1878 – 1936), theater poster project, 1930
€25.000,00
Sergey Chekhonin was a Russian artist who studied applied drawing, ceramics, and pottery in St. Petersburg. He settled in France in 1928, gaining attention for his finely crafted ceramics, as well as for his portraits and miniatures. « His work is extremely varied. It recalls those Renaissance artists who approached the most diverse domains of art with the same mastery and perfection », reported the daily newspaper « L’Homme Libre » on June 11, 1929, after his solo exhibition.
This artwork is a cover project for the Ballets Russes of Vera Nemtchinova at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1930. The artist was part of the Russian community in Paris in the 1930s, reminiscent of Léon Bakst.
This project is one of several versions he produced.
Brown ink, watercolor and gouache on paper.
The artwork is signed at bottom left.
