Helmut Grill, born in Salzburg in 1965, is an Austrian artist whose practice consists of manipulating digital images and composing virtual landscapes.
In this C-print the artist shows a deserted beach with a rusty steamship, lying at anchor. The sky is grey and dominated by big threatening storm clouds, only the background sky seems brighter, witnessing the passed thunderstorm. However, a closer look reveals the origin of the clouds; they seem to come out of the steamship's chimney as headlights.
On the beach several objects are situated, which remind of humanity and civilization in the displayed wasteland. There is a balloon dog on the sand whose shining surface could refer to sculptures by Jeff Koons; there is a swim ring with the Lacoste logo in the water; a sea star and something like a black coke barrel on the beach. And lastly a figure reminding of Adolf Hitler appears on the rusty ship's rail.
First print out of three, all with different dimensions.
