This beautiful French neoclassical oil painting on canvas features one of the most important event of Greek mythology: The burning of Troy. The scene describes the moment of Aeneas escaping from the city of Troy with his family while he's carrying his old father Anchise on his shoulders. This strong and dramatic moment is masterfully described in the poem called Eneide wrote by the poet Virgil.
This rectangular oil on canvas painting has narrow proportion but is full of characters and architectural details. The movements of the figures in the foreground and the colors of their garments, highlighted by the flickering of the fire, build the drama, while the many other figures that act in the scene uninhibitely populate the majestic architectures destined to be devoured by the destructive fire.
The figure of Enea in both Roman and Greek history is extremely important since he is connected with the birth of the city of Rome.
The early history of Rome and its creation are linked to a large number of myths. One of this is depicted in our oil on canvas.
Amongst Roman ancestors are Enea, who escaped from Troy in flames with his father Anchise and his son Ascanio, they arrived on the coast of Lazio where he later married the daughter of the King. A descendent of the hero of Troy, is Numitore, king of Alba Longa, and his daughter Rea Silvia who married Marte, King of war and gave birth to twins Romulo and Remo.
The painting is in excellent overall conditions, original canvas and patina, interesting and stable craquelé in some parts. Uniform and consistent surface. Bright and saturated colors.
Housed in a 19th Century beautiful and deeply hand - carved gilt wood frame with typical neoclassical patterns such as egg and stylized acanthus leaves.
