This pleasant turn of the century (late 19th century-early 20th century) oil on canvas painting depicts a scene of an opulent interior in full ancient neoclassical Pompeian style.
The figurative scene seems to be set in the shop of an antique dealer who is showing his works of art to a beautiful Roman matron holding a fan and sitting in an armchair covered with an exotic leopard fur, accompanied by her lady in waiting.
The characters are surrounded by works of art, antique furnishings and sculptures displayed on Classic columns in an interior with wonderful frescoes while a beautiful blue and white mosaic floor is covered with a precious carpet.
The painting has a pleasant perspective that expands the space, also representing a glimpse of the city that can be seen outside the store. Extremely rich in details, this genre scene and history painting concentrates on antique Roman subjects and architectural features of ancient sites in the style of Pompei. In such a rich interior the figures seem to have a second place since the elaborate renderings of grandiose ancient Roman architecture, detailed mosaic floors, and Roman frescoes are eye catching with their vibrant colors.
The realistic Neo-Pompeian scenes of Ancient Roman day life and events were popular subjects in the late-Victorian period all over Europe, as exemplified by the popularity of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Our painting recalls the style of the Italian painter Ettore Forti.
Original canvas that surprisingly seems to be much older than the painting itself, probably a very old canvas was recycled covering a previous damaged painting. Very good overall condition, stable, bright and saturated colors, desirable slight craquele throughout. Housed in a rectangular new black lacquer wood and gold leaf frame.
