Hubert Schmalix, born 1952 in Graz, is an Austrian artist, who became known in the 1980's as an exponent of the "Neue Malerei" (New Painting), a neo-expressionistic movement in Germany and Austria.
In this painting he shows the back view of a laying nude woman, wearing only a brassiere. The muted pastose red colour in the foreground, applied with strong horizontal brush strokes, finds its counterweight in the translucent light blueish background. The flowing texture reminds of a curtain or water. It hugs the mirror image of the female figure.
